Ecology is also, if not primarily, a cultural problem. Respect for environment begins with a series of habits and behaviours. – Nicolas Hulot

The 80’s led to the rise of environmental awareness. An increasing population (there are over 7 billion of us!), combined with an expanding industrial development strained the availability of resources in our planet. So the concept of sustainable development was coined, in a publication by the International Union for Conservation of Nature.

Sustainable development, which is based on 3 axis (economical, social and environmental), is development that satisfies the needs of present generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.

Present economic and social process allows us, in many instances, to forget about the actions that lie beneath the products that we consume. However, talking about environment,  knowing it and bearing it in mind in our daily habits is more important than it may seem. Every act, however small it may be, has an impact (positive or negative) on the environment and the economy.

From health damages caused by certain types of food, to the transport means that we use, there are always small behavioural changes that we can be adopt in order to preserve this unique planet in which we live and that future generations will inherit.

Today, from Trovit, and with the environment in our hearts, we want to suggest you some ideas that may help our home to heave a sigh of relief.

  1. Bear in mind the 3 R’s: Reduce, Reuse and Recicle! All three are of great importance, but the first two are essential.

  2. When travelling, try to think in a greener way. Still deciding where to go for your well-deserved? Think about nature and how surrounding yourself of something so pure has the power to renew and activate you. Ecotourism is increasingly gaining more followers. Don’t know how to get to your destination? Think about car-sharing (driving a hybrid is even better!). . This trend is becoming more popular every day and, apart from being cheap and green, you will certainly meet many interesting people.

  3. Are you thinking about moving and you’re searching for an apartment? Have you heard of eco homes? Before moving into your new house, or once you have moved in, try to insulate your home against the cold in winter and to keep it ventilated in warm seasons. Make your home as efficient as possible in regards to energy, water and gas consumption.

  4. Watch your diet: get organised and choose bio! It may be more expensive than the rest of products, but there is a reason for this. Produced in non-massive amounts in factory and with a lower demand, bio products are high-quality and will, sooner or later, have a positive impact in our health, society, economy and, of course, environment. Gradually introduce them into your diet- you’ll feel the difference!

  5. Want to indulge yourself? Try to buy second-hand products instead of splurging on new things.

  6. Get involved! Either as an NGO volunteer or directly in your working environment, try to leave your footprint. Share the message, find out about ecological solutions and explain them to the people around you.  Do your bit wherever possible!
