Work on Robina city Parklands set to begin soon as Jan Grew’s events dream becomes reality
The parklands will be created on land to the east of Cbus Stadium and will featured space for sports and other events, including an expected “live site” for the 2018 Commonwealth Games.
The live site would be one of several locations for the public to gather and watch the Games on the big screen would be centred around the great lawn, the parklands’ centrepiece which will be the size of three football fields.
The land will not be leased out to any specific clubs and will be open to sports and other community events.

GRIFFITH University’s new health unit is aiming to reskill the country’s indigenous workforce to give them the tools to help their own communities. The First People’s Health Unit is aimed at Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people seeking a career in health as well as the wider population wanting a broader understanding of indigenous health.

HERE’S one company hoping the 2018 Commonwealth Games takes their business literally to new height. Broadbeach-based Alpha Flight Services has been operating for more than 33 years and makes cuisine for airlines including Jetstar, Qantas and Singapore Airlines. The company was last week named Singapore Airlines’ best caterer for 2014-15, with company bosses anticipating a boost as people arrive for the Games. Robina councillor Jan Grew said ground would soon break on the parklands.
“Now that we have received funding for the parklands precinct we can create it and it will be another thing we will be able to bring to the people of Robina as well as a space for major events in, and around the stadium,” she said.
“It opens up so many opportunities for us and we would like to have the great lawn as a live site during the Games as well as hosting other activities during the time which will help bring more people to Robina and the town centre.
“As it starts to take shake we can have a good conversation about how the area will work and there will be some great opportunities as we capitalise on the games.
More than 15,545cu m of fill originally removed during the stadium’s construction will be relocated from a site on Christine Ave to create the first stage of the parklands, including a carpark. It will include 70 permanent spaces as well as an overflow area with room for 180 vehicles.
Newly created sports fields will be built on elevated ground to make them floodproof. A clubhouse and amenities block will also be built.’
“It is intended that day use by schools of this sporting facility will assist to shift wear from other in-demand locations …” a 2014 council budget report said.
More than $500,000 was committed towards the precinct in June’s budget.
These funds will go towards permanent training and fitness facilities.
