Happy Internet Day! Now, just imagine: one day with no internet access at all. What would happen with our daily lives and activities if this technological tool broke down all of a sudden? Nowadays it is present in absolutely every single thing we do. Hence we are more and more dependent on it too.
You have probably not even noticed it but you use it almost all the time: when you wake up, when you commute, when you work, while cooking, while listening to music and even before going to bed. Well, almost everywhere! Internet is there. The “WWW” (World Wide Web) moves us to do things we could not even imagine before. Who would have thought that at some point we would be sending electronic letters and this within few seconds? Who would have thought that video calls from one country to another would be so easy? There are also tons of applications available for your cellphone or your tablet. Yes, they require today’s word: Internet. Games, tools, messengers and the list goes on.
So, to honor today’s special event we have decided to share with you our Internet top 10 interesting facts:
- “nordu.net” the first domain was launched in1985.
- The very first email address was tomlinson@bbntenexa. and was sent by Ray Tomlinson to himself in 1971. At this point, url domain extensions such as “.com” and “.net” didn’t exist yet.
- You can get to know the most popular searches and trends with Google’s Trends. Among the most popular searches we have Nelson Mandela, YouTube, iPhone 5s, Gangnam Style and Harlem Shake.
- In December 1995, Internet achieved a total user number of 16 million people.
- You can get to know the total number of internet users live and active now: average of 2,897,779,000.
- Asia has the highest percentage of Internet users.
- 55% of the content found on the Internet is in English.
- Users mainly use Google, Facebook and YouTube.
- Africa represented only 7% of internet users back in 2012.
- It’s difficult to name just one person who invented the internet as it was a combined effort of various people. But you should bare in mind that it is the result of a former project called Advanced Research Projects Agency Network (ARPANET).
