Furnishing your home doesn’t have to require handing over a huge wad of cash. Here, we show you how to style your living room on a budget that won’t cramp on style.

Buying items online has so many benefits, from the unique finds through to the huge savings that can be made in the process. Gumtree share their top 6 tips for finding a good quality bargain.

1. Use your imagination

When shopping for second hand homewares, sometimes it takes a little imagination to see an item’s full potential. Consider an item that might have a bit more wear and tear on the outside, but with a coat of paint or a touch up, will become a one of a kind item that looks luxe for less. Also, have a look online for furniture hacks as you might be able to turn a bookshelf into a TV cabinet.

2. Make sure you inspect the item before purchasing!

It’s important to make sure you inspect the item you’re purchasing in person to ensure it is as advertised. Take a friend along with you to inspect the item, both as a safety precaution and as an extra set of eyes.

Additionally, take your room dimensions with you. It would be a shame to buy a lounge or a dining table to then realise it doesn’t fit when you bring it home.

3. Plan ahead

If you’re overhauling a whole room, make a list of all the key items you need in the room and then decide where you can save money. Consider investing more money in pieces such as couches and dining tables and save money on decorative touches like plants, art work and throw cushions.

You should also be smart with your money and consider alternatives. For example, instead of buying one large canvas print to decorate a wall, buy smaller, and more affordable prints and posters, pop them in some frames, and you have yourself a feature wall!

4. Do your research

When first contacting the seller, don’t be afraid to ask a lot of questions:

  • How long have you had the item for?
  • Has the item had any faults you should be aware of?
  • Where and when was the item bought?

If the seller hasn’t listed enough photos to give you a complete view of the product, ask for a few more. Also make sure you have a look at similar items being sold and estimate a fair price. If you dig deep enough, you might  just discover the $30 credenza you’ve found is actually a valuable antique!

5. Know your budget

Dedicate time to researching what’s out there and the average price of similar items. Make sure you know what budget you’re working with and factor in things like delivery cost or van hire if you are picking up a bulkier item yourself.

Don’t be afraid to look below or above your budget. Gumtree is a great place for finding quality gems at a fraction of the price you’d expect and many items are also listed as negotiable, so break out the bargaining skills and you may be able to get the price down to something more inline with your budget.

6. Take your time

Take your time if you’re hunting for something specific, it might arrive when you least expect it!
