The humble side table tends to get relegated to purely functional status – usually as a surface for plonking anything from an alarm clock to coffee mugs and stacks of books.

But why not think outside the box a little – you might end up finding a side table that elevates your bedroom or living room to a whole new level.

We’ve rounded up a few options to get you inspired.

1. Bar cart

How’s this for a genius idea? Cult chair makers Byron Bay Hanging Chairs also make a gorgeous bar cart in their signature rattan – which also happens to make a perfect side table. Embrace the boho vibe and add a tumbling houseplant, some well-thumbed books and your favourite organic hand cream (and don’t forget its original purpose for serving your favourite drinks in style!).

Temple & Webster also stock some Art Deco-style versions, such as this Walter Drinks Trolley or Luxe Brass and Mirror Oval Bar Cart – just add a delicate crystal vase with flowers, framed photo and bedtime will become more glam instantly.

2. Block Stool

The Block Stool comes from newcomer Reddie, and is an example of the brand’s commitment to “handmade, timeless designs that can be customised to suit your personal style,” says Caroline Olah, Reddie’s creative director.

This multi-functional piece can be used as a side table, bedside table or stool.

“It’s a solid block of wood handcrafted in a refined finish, and we’ve added a pop of colour by including a removable metal top (available in five colours).

“The cut-out in the middle creates useful storage, and also makes the piece lighter and easier to handle,” says Caroline.

We love the flexibility of this piece – use it to store magazines and books or even a plant, for a green complement to the beautiful wood.

Bonus: Reddie lets you customise by size too, so you can create the perfect piece to fit your space.

3. Laptop Table

Perfectly suited to the modern household, with its multiple screens and accompanying increase in multi-tasking, Reddie’s Laptop Table is “a perfect table to watch Netflix, do work, or eat food on,” says Caroline.

It’s nice and slim-line too, allowing you to move it around easily as needed (is it just us thinking breakfast in bed…?).

The Laptop Table is made from a solid piece of teak wood that’s supported by a powder-coated metal frame, which in Reddie’s spirit of customisation, is available in five colours and can be tailored in terms of size.

4. Books

Bibliophiles can make a design feature of their obsession, thanks to this chic option.

The Ptolomeo x4 Short by Bruno Rainaldi (from the brand Opinion Ciatti; available at Space Furniture) is a vertical, self-standing, 360° revolving bookcase that can also double as a side table. Try arranging the spines by colour, for added visual impact.

You could also try a DIY option by using some large, hardback books of your own (think beautiful coffee-table tomes) – just be sure to use books of similar size and ensure the stack is sturdy enough to hold whatever you place on top.

5. The non-table

Legs… who needs ’em? Try mounting a stylish wall shelf for a streamlined take on the side table.

These cute corniches by Ronan & Erwan Bouroullec for Vitra, available at Space Furniture, are perfect for assorted bits and bobs – try grouping a few together if you need more surface area.

6. Trunks

Wanderlusters – why not channel your love of travel (or just, er, vintage suitcases) by using a trunk or two as an alternative to a traditional side table?

Hit up your local vintage store, market or op-shop and rummage for the perfect fit for your abode.

You could also try this Jet Trunk from Domayne, available in black or grey with gold hardware. Stash your favourite bedtime reading inside and rotate your favourites on top; or simply use it for extra storage as well.

7. Lockers

Go for the industrial-chic look with a pair of lockers, such as these lovely army green numbers from HK Living.

These are actually made of wood and paired with metal handles, so you’ll feel more modern industrial than M*A*S*H.

Or, for a super-affordable option, try these from Kmart.

8. Ladder

For the minimalist – or anyone who’s short on floor space – a ladder is a great streamlined alternative to a side table.

This teak option from HK Living makes a lovely design feature. Hang your book or magazines over a rung, opening at the page you’re up to; drape display-worthy scarves or Turkish towels over it; or secure a clamp lamp or hanging bulb.
