DAVID Henderson, one of the owners of 2013 Melbourne Cup winner Fiorente, is chasing $19.75 million in “stake money” on the Mermaid Beach oceanfront.

Mr Henderson and wife Rhonda have their home in Millionaires’ Row, Hedges Ave, in the marketing starting gates.

It is to be advertised nationally and internationally and, if it achieves the asking price, will run second on the list of the Gold Coast’s biggest house sales.

The Hendersons built the five-bedroom-plus-study home four years ago after outlaying more than $13.65 million on a double block with an old beach house and an adjoining lot that was home to two flats.

The property, at 187-191 Hedges Ave and across the road from the Mermaid Beach Surf Life Saving Club, has uninterrupted views south over an adjoining park.

The move to sell the two-level home comes as the Mermaid beachfront market is stirring from a GFC-induced slumber.

There have been sales at $13.25 million and $11.45 million in the past four months and an offer, which did not go ahead, of $27.8 million on the home of the man who steered the float of Billabong International, Scott Perrin.

Michael Kollosche, principal of Kollosche Prestige Agents, yesterday said the Hendersons wanted to capitalise on renewed buyer enthusiasm for top-shelf homes by the beach.

“A number of well-heeled people willing to spend more than $10 million have been scouting the beachfront for homes.

“They face a major problem in that there is little on the market, as was the case even during the GFC.

“Hence they are having to compete for those homes that do become available.”

Mr Kollosche is marketing the Henderson home in tandem with Mr Henderson’s brother Luke, of John Henderson The Professionals Mermaid Beach.

David Henderson is a former joint principal of that agency but eased out of the business five years ago to devote his energies to his racing interests.

He said he was travelling to Sydney, where he has two dozen racehorses, up to three times a week and also making forays into a 13-mare breeding operation in the Hunter Valley.

“Our plan is to get something smaller on the Gold Coast and also to have a base in Sydney,” he said.

The Gold Coast record for a home stands at $27 million, paid in 2008 when BreakFree founder Tony Smith sold an uncompleted mansion in Hedges Ave to later-failed internet whiz Daniel Tzvetkoff.
